I think males are usually darker during spawn. I'm not too knowledgeable though
Guys I'm new to this sight but have found it to be a wealth of knowledge and info. This should be an easy one for y'all. How do you tell if a crappie is male or female? (without putting a filet knife on em.) Thanks in advance.

A question that's been kicked around before, and the concensus is that you can only tell the difference during the spawning season :
White Crappie - easiest way is coloration, as the male's black pigmentation will get much darker, and the coverage area will get larger. Females will have the bulging stomach, but their coloration will be much the same as observed at any other time of year.
Black Crappie - not so easy to determine, in many cases, but the males can have darker head & breast area coloration. Again, the females will have that (egg laden) bulge .. unless mostly or completely spawned out.

The females are the ones wearing lipstick
thats some funny stuff there
Easy to tell when you clean 'em

None the male and female are the same in apperance except during the spawn where the male gets alot darker in color. almost purple. other than that you can not tell.
