    Default 1989 Ranger Steering

Still getting boat ready for spring. Steering is very hard. Has 150 hp evinrude. All suggestions needed. Just purchased 1989 ranger. Very good condition. Like to keep it but need to be realistic. Still have my other boat, 1997 express 18 ft. with 115 yamaha. Had later for 13 years. Very realiable but I fish Paris, Tn. Ky Lake area. Would like ranger for rougher water. Thanks Would like to be sure.

Welcome from Manchester. This might get more response in the mechanics section, but I'll give you what little I know. 2 friends had the same issue with their steering and both had to replace the steering cable. One broke at the ramp, thankfully not while under way, which is a possibility. I'm going with the thought that you've greased the fittings on the cable. Unless you've done this before, or seen one done, or are very handy, it's a job for a pro. Those things just don't cooperate when going around corners and threading thru tight places. I watched one being done once and that was enough to convince me. Keep us posted on the outcome, that way we all learn something. Tight lines........Skeet.

I'd replace steering head and cable. Too old to be reliable.

Agreed. Time to replace your cable, I like Teleflex brand cables.
