    Default legal or illegal

Is it legal to take a motorized vehicle on the ice? I asked at the State Park office last year and they told me it was legal. I went to Corp of Engineers office and they told me no it is illegal to drive any motorized vehicle on the ice. (golf carts, atv's,riding mowers etc. They told me I would get a ticket if they caught me out on the ice. I went back to the State Park Office and told them what they said and they told me the Corp of Engineers own the lake. I went to the last boat show here and asked the Corps of Engineers at thir booth about this and they told me, if it was up to them, they would not allow anyone out on the ice. So as of now I do not know if it is legal or not to put my ATV on the ice

From page 5 of the 2012 Fishing Regulation under new for 2012.

    "ICE FISHING
Motorized electric or gasoline-powered two-wheeled vehicles, allterrian
vehicles, work-site utility vehicles, golf carts, and snowmobiles
may be operated on ice-covered department waters only for the
purpose of ice fishing from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half
hour after sunset. These vehicles shall enter onto the ice only from
boat ramps and points of entry as established by posted notice "

Why on Earth would you want to take a golf cart or lawnmower on the ice? Any little bit of snow and slush and those two things would get stuck so easy...

As it is written, that only applies to State Owned or run reservoirs/lakes. It does not apply to Federal/COE's waters. The KC District does/did allow those types of vehicles on the ice. The Tulsa District does not allow any of them on the ice. Furthermore, each KC District allows the discretion of the Park Mgr. to determine if and when it's possible.

I will tell you this, if they are allowed and you "lose" a 4 wheeler or are unable to retrieve one through the ice. When that thing blows a shore or if it sinks and the CORPs follows up either scenario the fines are STEEP. Not 100's but 1000's

My first thought would not be legality - it would be safety. I don't do any ice fishing because it is not my thing. However, my wife is from Wisconsin and I know folks up there drive vehicles out on the ice. However, the ice does get pretty thick up there. The folks who do drive on the ice know when it is safe and what areas are not safe. Even in cold winters there are some spots on their local lakes that will not support a vehicle. I do know that the ice is generally not as thick as it is in Wisconsin. Just make sure you KNOW that you are safe. Then you can concern yourself with whether it would be legal to do.

I agree with Pete, Most Kansas Ice would be marginal for a vehicle, very risky business IMHO

I agree with Blackdog40. Be careful this year with the warm temps.

I guess this is good information to have for next year. (This is me pouting about the warm weather) I had planned several months to go ice fishing today for a week. Now I'm hoping I get to go period. We may go north in a month or so but it depends on the weather outlook.

Maybe its write time for you ice fisherman to invest in an Argo at least then if you go through the ice the vehicle will stay afloat and so should you.
