    Question Motor Question

I have an older 90 hp Mercury (1985 or 1986 in line 6 cylinder) and I'm starting to have problems w/ the reverse on it. It will shift into reverse just fine, but I really have to give it some gas to make the boat back up. Even then, it's moving at a snails pace at 4000 rpm. Has anyone experienced this or know what the problem may be?

Your adjustment for the shifting cable may have vibrated out somewhat. You might try disconecting the linkage and try shifting it by hand. If it goes fully into reverse, all you need to do is readjust the linkage. You can do this out of the water as long as you are feeding water to it. Walmart sells a plastic clamp with rubber suction cups on both sides. Hook that up to a garden hose, clamp it over your water intake and turn the water on. You can safely start your boat motor. Remember to stand clear of the prop while it is spinning. Also, make sure there is water coming out of the "Pee Hole" and try not to rev the rpms too high for very long. Leave the water running until AFTER you have shut your motor down!
    Good Luck!

If you have anymore questions, this is a fantastic site to get a real mechanic to answer them.

Crappie Reaper, I wasn't implying the you are not a mechanic. The way that came out it sounds like I am.

Have your prop checked by a prop shop. It sounds like it is slipping and may need to be re-hubbed. It is possible for them to slip in one direction, especially the older Merc props.

Oh...I don't know if it matters, but I changed props about a month ago.

Yeah...it was a new one. Thanks for the link, Crappie Reaper.....I talked to the guy and he thinks it's the spacer/hub that goes behind the prop. When I push on the prop, theres a little give, and he thinks that's what's causing my reverse problem. Here's the link if you're interested.
