    Default Drift Anchor Sock

Any recommendations on size for a drift anchor? With the wind at 10 to 15 mph we need to do something to slow down the boat when trolling with the wind.

I know some folks use the 5 gal buckets to slow things down. I would prefer not to go this route because of space in the boat. I would rather have something that would just fold down and toss out when needed.

My thinking is that it might be best to over anchor since slower is better. I am in a 17' G3 and was considering a 36" anchor (made for 18' to 20' boat). Too little, too much or just right?

Hogpaw, I forget how many inches it measures, but I've got one of
the ones from Cabelas with the float/weights built in - it is a XL size.
It works good on my 18' Al boat, there are times I wish it were a little
more effective, but it is only when it is really howling - I'm talking whitecaps
slopping over the transom. I think instead of going bigger, I may just get
another one the same size, pull two when I need more "brakes".

    J White,

That is good to know. All the XL I have seen so far have been 36" I will double check Cabelas. Thanks for the lead.

They list them as for boat size. I have one for a 18' boat that I use on my 12' jon boat and sometimes this isn't enough when the wind really rips. Like the above poster mentioned I think having two of them is the way to go. If you buy just one in the bigger size it may slow you down to much. If you can find one that has an adjustable opening at the end that would be the way to go.
Either way I would never venture out without one. They are the best thing going when the wind makes boat control impossible. Mine is made by Minn Kota and have had it for four years now with no problems, Very durable

I have a Minn-Kota Drift Sock and it didn't slow my boat down very much one day. Winds were blowing out of the South at about 15mph to 20mph gusting to 25mph. I fish with this boat.. A 16ft Fishermarine Water Strider III Aluminum Bass boat.
