Yes it does matter in water under 8 ft or so. It's more pronounced if you are fishing with someone who has 14 ft rods and you have the 16 ft version.
You get that much wider spread.

My thought is that once you go with a 3 piece rod, go big.

It's just what YOU like. Some are more comfortable with shorter rods, and some like em longer. The shorter poles have a bit more backbone and a bit less tip action.

I haven't had a chance to compare a 14 to a 16 PST side by side but I have compared a 12 to a 16 at the same time and it made a huge difference that day but it's like so many things in this sport of crappie fishing some days it may not make a difference at all but we were fishing 5 feet deep in 8 - 10 foot water and it mattered big time. I have also compared 16 foot Capps and Colemans against PST's with 1/2 oz double minnow rigs and the C & C's win consistantly.

We have had the pst's for years and tried the C & C's. I like the pst's better. The 14's work fine but it's time to upgrade. Thinkin about 16's

DTG,
I have been fishing with Capps and Coleman 12ft rods and they have worked good for me. Everybody is telling me that I need to go to the 14ft or 16ft rods, I have 2 of the PST 12ft and like them to. How much difference is the 12ft to the 14ft? You know I mostly fish Reelfoot so what are your thoughts?
