Just about any of 'em will work in "auto"... which is as easy as it gets....

They only get really complicated by not being able to leave the buttons alone (like I cant)...

I would suggest to research which technology (SI/DI/2d) would work best for your fishing methods....
Decide if GPS chartplotting would benefit you.....
    Decide your comfortable price range....
    Jump in...

Brand decision should only be dictated by the "features you need vs features each unit offers"..

I love my Humminbirds, but I'm sure the Lowrance is a good unit. I've played around with it some in the store. I doubt you'd go wrong with either. Just make sure you think long term when you buy and don't be afraid to spend the extra money if it's what you want.

Get the most expensive one you can afford. You'll learn how to use it in a very short time. The more pixels, the better the picture. The better the picture, the easier to read. Like Ricki said, they all work good in auto.

I would reccomend a Humminbird for ease of use. The 798 is a good unit, but if you can afford the 898 is so much better.

main thing is to learn how to use what you get.....I have 2 eagle fish elite 480s....not the most high end or nicest graphs out there by any stretch, but they have improved my fishing alot just because I took the time to learn them well.....currently saving my cabbage for an hds7 or 8 w/structure scan.....but point being dont just throw what ever you buy on there and stare at it, learn how to use it.....prob cant go wrong w/a high end lowrance or hb

Really like the Garmin 550c for finding brush tops, and use a Hummingbird 190c on my trolling motor.
