Yes. I do. I only fly fish for suspending Specks or shallow Specks, not for deep ones as I would have to switch to a sink-tip or sinking line (I hate casting sinking type fly lines). Whole lot easier just to use a spinning or spincast outfit when they are deep.

See this thread link. This is the fly rod rig I've started using for suspending Specks.

Rick Zieger from Iowa over on FAOL fly fishes for Specks all the time on ponds and lakes but I believe that most of his catches are White Specks and are caught in shallow water or are suspending fish.

    One of his articles.

Here's a good one for Crappie and other fish:

    Pearl Bugger:

    Mustad 9671 in size 6
    Gold Bead
    White thread
    White Marabou
Pearl Chenille in Pearl color(you can also use Crystal or Ice Chenille)

    Put bead on hook.
    Put hook in vise.
    Tie in thread.
    Tie in white Marabou tips.
Tie in chenille and palmer to the front.
    Tie off and whip finish.

You can take a black marker and bar(vertical black lines) the marabou.

Makes a nice bait fish imitation for crappie. You don't even have to use a fly rod to fish it either.

You can also make this in a larger or smaller size as well.

I love fly fishing but I love eating crappie also. I go with whatever way i think i can catch more and that is usually with an ultralight. You might want to try a gummy minnow in chartreuse.

    Default Great Thread!

I am always interested in learning something new and this thread fits the bill. Interesting stuff guys. Thanks for all the information and the links.

I am getting the boat fixed to go as I type this. Just got the plugs soaking in some sea foam and am letting the sea foam eat the carbon off the plugs and on the cylinder walls too. Got some sea foam in the gas and got new oil and gas in the tank. New lube in the lower unit and the axles are all greased up and ready to go. Boat batteries all charged up to full. New State Boat registration stickers are installed. Fishing License purchased and signed and stuck in the wallet. New fishing line ready to go. Minnow bucket in the boat ready to be filled with minnows. Tackle box stays in the boat. Boat was kept in the Garage all winter long. Truck got booted out into the cold. LOL. Cleaning out the cooler and getting it ready to ice down some diet cokes and will put a few sandwiches in there as well.

Two bags of crappie fillets are defrosting right now. Presto GrandPappy and 6 new quarts of Peanut Oil are sitting by ready to go.

    I am eating fish tonight.

    YES we do.
It is usually an open water/ shallow water venture for us too. By the time verticle jigging is required because of depth or cover, we are off to other targets. Sometimes we need to use the "bobber and bug" method, but not often. Minnow immi's are generally used, but sometimes they seem prone to a brown or olive woolybugger......bug immi maybe?

If you like links that you can learn something from, then here is a really great link:

    http://www.flytyingforum.com/index.p...=flysearchform

This link is used to search a huge fly pattern data base. They have all kinds of flies for all kinds of fish.
They even have several great forums to learn about fly tying. That site has helped me greatly.
