    Default newbie question

Hey guys, new to the site from a member standpoint but ive been getting info from here for years so first I would just like to say thanks for all your tips and tricks.Alright first question is about rods, now ive always fished for crappie with minnows, but in the last year or so I have fell in love with jigs, jiffyjigs to be exact, there local here in ga, but anyways the ponds where I fish have a ton of standing timber, but the crappie are not holding tight to them there in about a ten foot radius of the timber so im fishing horizonally and im fishing with a zebco 11 and a 4'6 UL rod, the water is 5 to 8 foot deep, so am I fishing this the right way or do I need a really long pole like a 10 or a 12 foot rod, because I dont know what the advantages are with long rods. Thanks in advance for your input

    Cool

    Check out this post

The advantage I only see in anything over 8ft is in the spring when they are up shallow and you don't want to run the boat into them. So really the long rods are
good for sneaking up on them.
    Thumbs Up

The rod you have is fine if you are slow retrieving or pumping your jig on the retrieve. If you want to be just vertical jigging you will need a longer rod.
