Targeting pre spawn crappie

Just started catching larger dark males.
Water temp is around 60*.
Am fishing from shore and casting out. Any suggestions on patterning this pre spawn process ?

It has been my experience that during the spawn you should not be casting out. You will be surprised how close to the bank these crappie will get when spawning. Of course it will depend on the water clarity. I have caught them as close as 1' from the bank.

Last weekend I was out casting away, nothing. Then I let my line just drift I caught 6 fishing about 2-6 ft from the bank.

I would use a slip float rig and cast out. Let the jigs sit about 18-24 inches under the float and bring it in to the bank slowly. I use this technique back on a pond back home and do really well.

If you are reading 60 degrees and the males are almost all black the females are done and the males are still there protecting the nest.I have had 4 days after our ice went out. I am just starting today so I'll fish all the way through. It starts about 3-5 days after ice out.
