    Default HD 9/21 Melvern 9/23 ( WLCF)

Lee and I fished Hillsdale wednesday and didn't have much luck on brush piles so we tried the trees some with the same results. We were about to call it a day but deceided to try one more big tree on our way back to marysville ramp and bingo we hit the right spot! We ended with 16 keepers and many more caught in about an hour so it saved the dayThumbs Up We were using jigs tipped with minnows...the honey tree was in 23fow. Friday found us at green acres for breakfast then to the minnow store and then to arrowrock ramp. We tried a pile close to the ramp with no luck and then headed to the trees. The bite was slow but the fish were nice slabs ( well for some people that is) Lee had good success catching them on the fall and I had better luck with just letting it set. Of course Lee had a magic jig color and style and hardware that I won't divulge (maybe Lee will post the secretRofl) The fish were in 7-10 fow and caught on 1/16th jig & body and tipped with a minnow- bluegrass was the best color. We ended with 19 keepers with a good number in the 12-14in. rangeHands Clapping We did try some brush piles with limited success and small fish. ( WLCF = "watching Lee catch fish" )
FAITH, FAMILY, FRIENDS & FISHING...... hopefully in that order but honestly, not always!

Good job, we had somewhat similar results ourselves yesterday. But we stuck it out way after dark and bagged a bucket of NICE slabs. I'll post some pictures today if I figure out how to transfer them from my email. Just before sundown till after 9pm we flat whacked some. They're at the tire shop now getting valve stems put in them, so we can blow them up as big as we want. Just fooling, it was tough for us the first six hours of fishing maybe. But when they came up out of the brush to play, it was game on. Stayed way after dark switching to glow baits and continuing a great bite. Plenty of 14"-15" crappie, considering the first 5.5 hrs we only had 4 fish. We kept 23-4 and tossed about the same back. We had plenty and really just don't need to clean that many. They are gonna be easy to obtain now. I'll post some pics.

Yes it certainly was a couple of enjoyable days of fishing. That day at Hillsdale I had pretty well exhausted my repertoire of tricks and had decided the crappie just weren't going to play with me that day. We had been working shallower water all day and when we first tied up to that tree we were only working down about 12 ft and worked down to at that depth for about a half hour without any thing. In checking deeper at 15 ft it was almost immediately that we got thumped. For several times in a row it was catch a fish, bait the jig and set it at 15 ft and get it thumped. It was common that if the fish was missed by one the other fisher would just lower his bait into that spot where the fish was missed and catch the fish previously missed. I think it was Ron that taught me that trick. At first and being the considerate and courteous fisherman I am it was rather difficult for me to use that devious technique of trying to catch a fish that had been located by the other fisherman. Of course eventually the bite died off and we racked it up as another good day on the water.

As far as the bait used at Melvern it was a 1/16 oz Crappie Pro tail light jig in the minnow color. The other day a Melvern with Ron I had been using a orange tail light jig with some success. Since the bite had been somewhat slow and hit and miss I had switched to the minnow color jig on Friday. The hardware was just using a barrel swivel with fast lock snap to attach the jig something I picked up from another Crappie Com member from Texas.

I even used ol fishy Dan's comments at Clinton about going to the bottom in the brush for the bigger fish. I was using a cannon ball sized jig and did catch a nice Melvern crappie that had mud on its ventral fins. Thought I was going to get something going for the brush piles a Melvern but that was the only keeper that I caught on the main lake piles. Still racked up another good day on the water working the timber.
