Default How to keep trolling line from twisting?

I've noticed that when I troll my line gets extremely twisted. When I reel in the jigs (to move to another area, avoid weeds, etc) I can see the jig spinning over and over.

I have a swivel-snap at the end of every line and I thought that would take care of it...but obviously not. I'm thinking of changing to hi-vis yellow line with a flurocarbon leader -- maybe put a swivel at the end of the hi-vis and another at the end of the fluro?

Is this common or am I doing something wrong. One thing I do that most people don't is put a little sliver of fish on the jig's hook. Could that be causing the spin?

    Many thanks for your ideas.

    Swizzles!
I trolled in Slat water with Herring. I learned to put a Bead Chain Swivel in the middle of a Five Foot leader, between the weight and the Herring.

With your light stuff, you may need to put that Bead Chain (Stainless) swivel about two feet below your snap swivel.
I just wish I could be better at fishing. Or maybe luckier!:D

Then the theory is that it's the weight that causes the twist? I use a 3/8 oz. crimp-on sinker about 18" in front of my bait. I've wondered whether it's the "ears" on the crimp-on sinker that causes the spinning because it's not symetrical.

thudpucker, in your set-up is the weight in front of, or behind, the bait?

Always have the Weight in front of the Bait. Fish have that "Filter" that keeps them away from abnormal stuff.

You may have figured it out. Every time I used those Round weights I had problems. We used them trolling for Rainbow in Eastern Washington.
We used "Belly" sinkers or "keel" sinkers to keep the line from following the bait around in Spiraling.
Try some "lead" line that some folks use for trolling. It wont go real deep though.

Your line twists because your end unit is spiraling instead of Rotating. It's going around in large circles. You can Vary the Speed and something will change.

PS: you can straighten that twisted line out by letting it out behind the boat for a long time with nothing tied on. Run the boat up to the end of the lake and back and it'll be OK.
I just wish I could be better at fishing. Or maybe luckier!:D
