    Default Sabetha Pony Creek Lake

Fished Pony Creek this afternoon for about 4 hrs. Crappie biting great, easily caught 30 fish, only problem is very, few if any keepers. Several that may have measured close to ten inchers, most smaller in 8 to 12 ft of water 5 to 8 feet deep. Never found what I was looking for so chased bass for about the last hr and a half and had good luck with 14 inch and smaller bass. Water temp down to 77.

How was the water clarity? Did you see any fish busting shads?

Water clarity was about 1 1/2 ft and pretty green although not as clear as it usually is, I saw some fish busting shad, not wipers not sure what their were but oddly never actually saw any shad schools on top. Was there a week and a half ago bass fishing and schools of shad were very shallow and were easily visible, good thing was the size of the shad was around 2 in which is good for the crappie looking into the fall, last couple years that shad have been 4 to 5 inches by this time of summer "good for wipers and bass but bad for the crappies". Was at the old Sabetha city lake two weeks back and noticed the shad were of small size there too and everywhere in contrast to the last few yrs there as well. In these smaller lakes when the shad stay small into ice up the crappies get incredibly fat like they do in the larger lakes, just does not seem to happen every yr in the small lakes with shad forage.
