    Default Transam saver question?

I have an 18ft lowe with a 115 opti and last night I broke my transom saver. It has a flip down latch that used to get home (5 miles). My question is does this hurt anything? I trim it way up and flip the latch then trim down to rest it on the latch. So I guess the ultimate question is do I need to get another transom saver?

    Thanks for the input.

I would get one. Keeps the motor from bouncing and the transom from taking all the weight.

The saver keeps the weight of the motor from bouncing on the transom...which could cause transom failure (cracks/splits). If it were me I'd get another one.

The transom saver will help keep road vibration/bounce from working back & forth on your transom and damaging it. I would definetely use one.

Yes .... if you broke one of the tab plates, all the weight is being carried by the other one. Motor weight isn't equally balanced between the two, so it's only a matter of time before you bust the other one off.

I've always used a Transom Saver pole, rather than the flip down tabs on the motor mount. The pole/bar type "transom saver" will keep your motor tilted up far enough to not have any possibility of the lower unit fin hitting the road, plus it will help keep the motor from flopping on its side (or riding that way) .. which relieves the pressure on your flip out tabs (since they won't be needed/engaged) as well as your trim/tilt system.
Currently have a Swivl-Eze Transom Saver on my boat .... but, you may be able to get by with one of the less expensive ones, seeing as how you're only towing a short distance. My guess is that it'd be a lot less expensive than replacing the trim tab assembly. And, if the motor wants to flop over to one side ... a bungee cord around the steering wheel & throttle cables will help keep it from flopping.

Get a new transom saver....and get a good one. They did not name that device Transom Saver for nothing.

Don't buy a cheap one. Get the one that looks like a crab claw on the engine end. With a transom saver, the weight of your engine is transferred to the trailer taking that weight off the transom of your boat.

I'd vote to get another one. $50 is a heckuva lot cheaper than a new or used opti.

The idea of the transom saver is as it implies but it also takes the pressure off of the cylinder. Which takes a beating without the transome saver. EB
