Default Top 3 Things!! (Great thread for everyone!!)

I thought we could put together a thread that might help us all.

Let's say you plan a fishing trip to a lake you have never fished before. What would be the top 3 or 4 things you could do or research to help you catch more fish.

    My top in order.....

    1. If it's a Corp lake......Stop at the visitor Center! I have received more help from these people than any bait shop would ever know. They also have free maps, and know all locations of submerged structure.

    2. Pool Levels (as it pertains to rise or fall)

    3. Depth of Fish (usually answered by fishermen on the lake, or at the ramp.)

    4. Look for the masses! (most crappie fishermen will congragate in the same spot if they are biting.)

    Default As for me.....

    1. make sure i am rigged boat, bait, and tackle for any possible situation.
    2. check the forums and make contact with real people who fish the lake i am going to. THis has proven to be most valuable.
    3. Watch the weather and look at fishing reports that correspond with it.

Since you asked for the top three but put 4, so will I.

    4. Be extra nice to my wife so that she will let me go again.

I won't leave the house without my hand held Garmin Etrex GPS unit and some spare batteries. It has all my FHS maps in it's memory. Before I got the GPS I always got a paper topo map before I went fishing.

I won't leave home without my deph finder as that is the second most important tool that I take with me.

Then there is a cooler full of drinks and food. Can't fish on an empty stomach.

And finally don't forget the PEE cup and toilet paper for the boat. haha

There are many ohter things that I put on my list such as the tackle box, fishing rods, line and the boat etc.

    1) Study the area using Google Earth or Terraserver
    2) Buy a good contour map.
    3) Ask questions, they will either help, lie or tell you to kiss off.
    4) Hire a guide. (I know, we all hate directions, but one guided trip can set you up for many successful trips on your own)

    1. Depth Finder
    2. GPS
    3. Lake Maps - the best available for the lake
    4. Find out how deep they're being caught from any source available

Oh yeah, ditto on the guide. Probably the best investment you can make on a new lake.

Only need 2 things. Time to get to go and an evening on Crappie.com. Got to say the info here is better than you'll get from someone at the boat ramp...izzy
