    Default New to Crappie fishing...

    Hi all...

I have never fished for crappie and would like the "A to Z's" about catching them.
Anyone know of a thread on this site with that info or is there a "Best" publication available for purchase?

Any information would be "Greatly Appreciated!!"

    Thanks...

Welcome from Alabama. Check the "Stickies" at the top of the forum. There is one "Knots and rig drawings for beginners" you might be interested in. Also, if you want to learn to tie jigs there are several "Stickies" there to help you get started. You should also check out the Archives. It is like the hall of fame for best threads ever.

There's tons of info on this site, but what do you plan to do? Is it legal to troll with multiple poles in Montana? If so, there are loads of trolling threads. Will you vertical jig or cast jigs? Is it legal to use live minnows as bait in Montana? These are all common methods.

There are two major crappie magazines: Crappie World and Crappie Angler.

In-Fisherman puts out an excellent book on crappie fishing. They also have crappie DVDs (as does Al Lindner.)

This looks like a good place to start:

If you enjoy water-based outdoor recreation, Tongue River Reservoir is a great place to be during the month of June. It offers almost endless possibilities.

Fishermen flock there for the crappie action at this time of year. The reservoir has both black crappies and white crappies and, hands down, offers the best crappie fishing to be found in the state of Montana

    Thanks for the replies.
On the west side of the Rockie Mountains in Montana (where I live)... Trolling is legal, two pole per person max is legal and live bait is illegal.
Trolling or jigging? Either would work for me... There are only two lakes here that I have heard that have crappie and I have always wanted to catch them.
    I'll chase down these publications/DVD's...
    Thanks!

I would suggest just typing in "trolling" into the search function. You'll be reading for days. :D Maybe somebody else will chime in and suggest one or two specific trolling threads that are especially useful.

I'll send you a PM about jig fishing.

    Good luck!

Welcome, there is more information on this site than you will ever find in any book or magazine. Good Luck!
