Default About jig weights and hook sizes

Since I fish in a shallow lake (avg. 8ft depth, max 14ft) I'd like to use 1/16 and/or 1/32 oz. jigs. But the hooks seem kind of small for big-mouth crappie, about sizes 6 or 8. Seems like I have better sets and lands on size 2 or 4 when live-baiting.

Do they make jig heads with 1/16 or 1/32 oz weight and size 2 or 4 hooks? Or should I stick with the standards?

    Thanks,

    the newbie

Many people on here make there own jigheads. Alot of us have modified our molds to hold the bigger hooks...

Don't sell the smaller hooks short, though. I bet 90% of the crappie I've caught in my life came on a 1/32 oz jig with a #6 hook.

I make jigs all the way down to 1/64 with a #4 Sickle hook. SO that size is easy to the bigger ones like you are asking about. I also make regular bend up to #2 on 1/16 so they are out there.

Dee Mason (I can provide e-mail address) makes 1/16 and 1/32 with a number 4 hook - 6 cents each
He's also on ebay and has a nice jig chart picture with ruler. Personally I like the number 4 hook for 3" baits and 6 for 1.5-2.75 " baits. Sickle hook jigheads are a bit more, but I like them for certain baits.

I agree but you can still catch them in smaller sizes. A #2 sickle hook has a larger gap than most of #2 hooks in other brands. A lot of us use them because they come out of the box very sharp but I think the main reason is because we like the bigger gap it has. Gives you a better bite when you set the hook.
