There is a way to do it with fishing line, I'm not sure the technique, I'm sure somebody will post it. I know if you get one in you past the barb, the ER will do the same thing you could do yourself in the boat, minus the novicane. Push it through, cut off the barb, and back it out. I've never had one in my hand......but I have had a large Kahle hook stuck in my upper lip, thats something I'll never forget.

I've had two in my hand at different times. One was sunk in me by an ex-fishing partner. It was in my left hand and I pushed it through, cut it off with sidecutters, put a bandaid on, and went back to fishing. The other was a little more serious. My wife set a big rattletrap hook in my right hand pretty deep when I was trying to get it unhooked from the net. I can't do anything with my left hand so I told her what to do. That little 5'4" cherokee had so much adrenalin pumped she rammed that big ole rattletrap hook thru and snipped the point off like she was doing her nails. Hit the first aid kit for some antiseptic and bandage and went back fishing. In 63 years of fishing you are going to have some hook encounters.

One more war story...many years ago was fishing a Colorado high mountain lake with another Army CWO and a 2d Lt from Michigan. A gust of wind caused Mack to set a large woolly bugger deep in his thigh. He just pulled out a well used pocket knife and sliced his leg to get it out. The Lt passed out.

They have the little kits that use some mono and pressure on the shaft and jerk it out and it works great. The little kits have instructions for this.

One time I hooked a crank bait hook in the back of my index finger and my fishing partner used the string yank method to remove it. I applied pressure on the hook shank and the hook was yanked out. It worked great and impressed the heck out of me. As a further note he had side cutters and clipped the treble from the crank bait before pulling it out.

Ever since that happened I've kept a pair of side cutters as part of my equipment on the boat. Fortunately, so far, I've only used the side cutters to clip braid which works very well for me.

In that video if it was me removing the hook I would have first cut the treble off the spoon and also clipped the other two points just to make sure those other to points wouldn't have impaled something else in the process of removing the hook.

Here is a picture of the process showing the forces needed in using this technique from here. Fishhook Removal - June 1, 2001 - American Family Physician

I just use a pliers and pull it straight out backwords. Have done it several times. Once on me and once on a fishing buddy. EB anything else would take to much time away from fishing when the crappie are biting. hehe EB
