anybody ever made a wind sock or wind drag from a 3 gallon bucket? do you have to cut or drill holes in the bottom for it to work right? i have a 16 ft aluminum jon. how many buckets will i need to slow me down for spider rigging in a 10-15 mph wind? any help would be appreciated

Most of the wind socks I have seen were 5 gallon buckets and they had holes in the bottom. 2 of them should be enough.

I use a three gallon bucket with a three inch hole cut in the bottom. The hole isn't necessary for bucket to work, but it keeps your hands dry on cold days because you don't have to pour the water out.

I use the same on days to get the right drift. I have never tried the 3 gallon.

Hey Fish Detective how do you tie the bucket? Do you use the regular handle or put holes in the bucket and tie ropes to it? Just wondering how to rig mine.

drill 4 equally spaced holes near the top of the bucket and use rope to make a "harness".use the handle and most likely you'll lose the bucket;)
drill a few 1 1/2 holes in the bottom.
if i can get a pic of it and post,i have a fishing aquaintance who came up with a good working bucket.here's a link to the "bucket anchor with pics and instructions.

Thanks a lot Misfit. That is exactly what I needed. I was afraid the handles would not work. I knew someone on this site would help me out. Going to rig me one tonight and try it out tomorrow if the wind is blowing.

crappiechaser2, I am sorry that I did not get back with you!!!! My service was down. Misfit has gave you the info I see and my setup is about the same as he posted. Good luck, as you will find this will help you on a windy day.

Hey msfit. I went today and used the buckets. They worked just fine, but the wind was awful and nothing would slow us down enough to fish much. Managed to catch a few in some coves out of the wind.
Fished Barkley. Water was 49 to 50 degrees. Not many people out. Maybe just a little early for good fishing.Caught them on 1/16 oz chart./black jigs tipped with minnow about 10 ft.deep over cover in 15ft of water.
