Big Jigs

Has anyone on here experimented with some 1/4 ounce jigs with #2 or 4 hooks with any good success. I've been doing some trial pouring using this size head with smaller hooks. Going to drop em in some timber tomorrow to see what might happen. Appreciate the replys

Tell him you are a Crappie.com member and that I sent you -- inquire about having him custom make you some "big head" (ball head) jigs.
I had some that he made for me .... about 1/8oz heads, big eyes, and a stubby grey yarn type "body". They have produced some nice fish for me.
Mike does great work, and is a great guy to deal with. I wish I had one left, I'd post a pic ... but, I've lost them all Which reminds me, I need to get ahold of Mike, myself ... and order some. .......... cp

ps ... you won't see the "big head" jigs, I'm talking about, on the website ... you'll have to contact Mike and inquire about those. I included the website to show the craftsmanship of his products.

I have been using the Big Head Jigs for a couple of years now. They are great for jigging in high winds or deep water.

I limited out last year fishing 15 ft deep in Feb. on big slabs with these jigs but the interesting thing was that it was so windy that it was starting to white cap and I had to run my trolling motor near maximum just to stay over my brushpile! Had no problem staying in contact with my jig even under these conditions.

I also like the fact that they have a #4 hook instead of a #2 or bigger.

If I'm fishing with 1/4 oz jigs it means I have probably downsized. I normally start out with a 3/8 and a 1/4 tied on. I may use a 1/2 and a 3/8. If I'm fishing with anything smaller that a couple of 1/4 oz'er I'm probably close to going to a drop shot rig with a 1/2 oz sinker.

This is my winter time pattern tightlinging and hovering around channel edges and brush dragging these jigs around from 15ft to 30ft deep using braided line. After seeing these crappie spit up 3 to 4 inch shad in my livewell I have no qualms about using the heavier and larger baits. I try and convince myself I probably won't catch as many, using the larger baits, but the ones I catch should be bigger fish. Yet I seem to find quite a few dinks jump on these larger baits.

With these larger baits I still get a good 'thump' if they smack it but will still get rod tip action if they are real tentative with taking the bait and take any weight off the jig causing the rod tip to rise.

I usually only fish 1/8 oz leadheads with umbrella tubes for crappie on Nimrod .Cause they tend to feed on large shad. In windy conditions I will use 1/4 oz leadheads when fishing deep if can't feel my bait. Last friday 3-17 , my son and I brought in 52 lbs of crappie. These bigger jigs still catch a few throw backs. The falling water and cold has hurt fishing. I hope the rain and cold weather is over for a while.
