Default anybody have a 5hp Briggs and Stratton outboard?

I was wondering if anybody has seen or used one of these outboards. I'm looking to buy one if I get some good feedback. I figure this is all i need to get to the crappie. I have heard they're kinda loud, but that doesn't bother me. I wonder how fast one of these would push a 14' Jon. Or if it would even plane my boat with me and gear, I weigh 200lbs?

    Anybody?

    Thumbs up Good little motor

I bought one back in November. I really like it. It's great for the price, but you're right about it being loud. Sounds like a lawn mower.

I have a 14 foot 1436L Jon boat (alumacraft) and it puts it right up on a plane.(I also weigh about 200lbs) I do notice a difference when I have a fishing partner. It does plane, but not as quick and the top speed is a little slower. But it gets me where I need to go.

Its a 4 cycle motor so you don't need to worry about mixing oil. Its air cooled, so no worrying about the water pump going out.

Overall I'm very happy with it. (especially the price)

Crazyhorse, have you used your GPS to see exactly how fast it will do?

Sorry.....I don't have a GPS. It's on my wish list.

    Default B&S outboard

Well it sounds like a lawn mower because is is one. They use the Intek OHV engine as the power head on this motor, I know because I work at the plant in Rolla, MO that makes the power head for this motor.
Last week I was pulling parts so they could run these. I worked the run tunnel when they first started making them. They use a VERY good carb. nothing cheap about it.
The Intek engine is the best small hp engine B&S makes I think.
I have thought about getting one for a kicker motor to my bass boat.

A friend of mine has one for sale. I think it runs good, just really loud. He can't get his to plane though.

Wonder if there is a quieter muffler available?

    Thumbs up

I just sold my little 12' jon with a 5hp Briggs. I used it for three years with only one problem. I got a little water in my gas somehow and it wouldn't run well after that. Took it to the local Briggs repair shop and they fixed 'er up new. Briggs took care of the bill too. Nice people in the outboard division. I'm a small guy so it would plane with me no problem. With two people we were plowing water but moving along good. It is loud for sure! You won't be sneaking around the lake. It vibrates quite a bit too. It idles a little high so trolling speed is a little fast. Don't adjust the idle. The Briggs needs to run a little high because of the single cylinder. I like the fact that it's very basic and very portable. No mixing oil. And it's air cooled so if you run into some mud, no problem. For the money it got me out fishing for three years and I got my money back out of it.

    Briggs Tips:
1)Always use fuel stabilizer. Water in the carb doesn't fly on the Briggs.
2)The motor does not have a lock to tilt the motor up so make one out of a piece of pressure treated 2x4. You may have to do some carving for a custom fit that won't fall out.
3)Don't use it in salt or brackish water often or at all. Lots of exposed metal to rust on the motor.

    Good luck.

I would imagine so however there is a wire-grid cover that HELPS prevents your hand from touching the muffler. I doubt you could still have the grid cover on any different style muffler.

Oh. Watch out for the muffler! It does get HOT! Learned the hard way!
