    Default Grand Lake Crappie Bite

Went to GLSM Saturday to spend time on the water before Memorial Day becomes unmemorial with pontoons......... No bites till we hit the channels. Main lake was a waste of 2.5 hours. Fished western most channels in Otterbein with a couple hits. Other guy was flipping a tube and jerked one way left into the middle of the channel. Had a solid hit and run for 15 feet but bait came back empty. Well it did have a scale on the hook. About the size of a dime, opaque silver. Anyone got an idea of what it might have been?

Went to our favorite crappie channel and caught 5 in about 20 minutes before heading back in. One was 10+ and a fat black with eggs. Other four were small 6-7" with 2 white and 2 black. Also hooked into a 10" bass while crappie jiggin. Was lifting him into the boat when he flopped off.

Used 1/16th jigs with powerbait twister tails and ribbon tails. 3 were caught with meat, 2 without.

spent 5 hours on the lake. Started off for bass and tried to hit the channels that weren't mud pits.....tough to do on the south side of the lake. Boy is it green already. At least last year it waited until father's day. Didn't get a bite, tried plastics, jerk baits, crank baits, and twister tails.

We started fishing for crappies. No bites using red/green twister, black blue tube, or black green triple tail, until I changed to a 1.5" yamamoto panfish stinger tail with red flake. Looks like a real minnow. Then the bites started. Caught 4 in about 20 minutes plus a gill. All were with meat but did have a few bites without. No size to the first 3, small whites. Caught a feisty black that was about 8 inch but skinny. Couldn't tell if it was a spawned out female or a decent sized male. Most males have been short blacks this spring.

Water temps were 66-68 in the channels and main lake was 67.2. Let's hope the algae blooms hold off until the spawn is done.......... Will be back Sunday and Monday.

Bite was still a little slow so had to try new ground. Fished more rocks and logs than the typical brush cover. Caught 4 bass, a channel cat, 7 crappies, and a fat gill. One of the bass was FAT with eggs or had been gorging. Really fun weekend. Hope the Alum does the trick as the water was greener yet. Name: babybass5.30.jpg
