Tom Brokaw called them "the greatest American generation"; survived the Great depression, helped keep Britain in the war, suffered the disasters of Pearl Harbor, the loss of the Phillipines, Singapore, and the East Indies...helped to spool up "the Arsenal of Democracy"; in 1943 that generation built more military vehicles than the TOTAL of ALL internal combustion engined vehicles of ALL types built from 1900 upto and including 1942...they built more 4 engined planes in 1943 than the TOTAL # of aircraft ever produced upto that year...they sacrificed much to simply OVERWHELM 2 of the most EVIL "empires' ever to soil the history of mankind...then fought in Korea, held off the Soviet union, landed a man on the Moon (SEVERAL times AND brought all embarked home safely!); saw the beginning of equal rights for ALL Americans, lured the Soviets into a technological arms race that so stressed their economy the Soviet Union simply collapsed inward, almost peacefully...and now they are rapidily passing away...

I had lunch at a local Wendy's the other day and across from me sat an old man with an oxygen tank when he looked over at me i noticed he had a WWII veteran hat on so i finished up and walked over to him and asked if i could sit down because i wanted to thank him and shake his hand for the sacrifices he made defending our country so long ago he said please do i have a story i'd like to tell you about VE day not the war he said to this day it's still too painful to talk about even in the mind of an 85 year old man it was still just too much for him to talk about but he gave me a detailed account of what he was doing on the day the war ended....as we were parting ways he grabbed me hand and a big tear welled up in his eye and he said thank you young man i know my days and so many of my fellow veterans are numbered and it is awful good to hear someone still cares.......it only takes a few moments of our time to approach a veteran but it will be a memory that they will cherish.

My two best fishing buddy's were both WWII vets. One was a Marine in the Pacific who recently died of cancer. I can't count the days I spent in a boat with him. The second was my dad, an Infantry vet who was in the Battle Of The bulge and all the way to Berlin. Neither of them would talk a lot about their experiences, but when they did, I was spell-bound. You take a 19 year old young man out of the country who has never seen anything and throw him in the middle of some of the most horrific events in history, he is a different person from then on. God bless them all.

Memorial Day is a remembrance of both our father's service in WWII.

MY father's glass eye was a daily reminder in my house growing up. He never complained. (1912-1983)

My father-in-law survived the Bataan Death March, and spent 4 years in a Japanese POW camp. He never complained in the 10 years I knew him. (1916-1978)

Both are now gone, but definitely not forgotten. RIP William and Wayne.

Fly your flags and bow your heads folks. Remember those that paid the ultimate price, they deserve our respect.

"Their bodies were (and are) mortal, but the strenght of their deeds is of STEEL; rememberance keeps their memories bright and free from decay..." Douglas MacArthur on the legions of troops he served with and commanded in 4 conflicts, including 2 World Wars...
