Are there a lot of morels in NC? I used to find them in OH and would love to collect some down here. Do any of the gamelands around Raleigh have them?

Yes you can eat them, and yes you should be able to find them in the gamelands around Raleigh. I live in Wake Forest and found mine near the creek that is behind my house.
I wish I could find some down here. My wifes folks live in northern Michigan and they use to find a bunch of them up there and gave us a lot of them every year. Now they arent able to go find them any longer so we do get any mushrooms. I live in north Raleigh and a few years back I found ONE in the back yard near the creek. Thats the only only one I have found but it shocked me. Is it worth hunting them in our area? I dont even know where to look for them.
can you post some pics??
I have family that live in the heart of the rockies in Colorado. i havent been in years, but everytime we'd go searching for mushrooms. there was a time of year when you could only find them....July and August. dont know the name of the mushrooms, but there were a handful of different types. one of which only grew in elevations above 5000 feet (i think). it was nothing to go and find boxes upon boxes of them per trip! fun times.

NC law prohibits gathering of any plants from game lands property. i found this out the hard way digging ramps.
morels are as good as portabella mushrooms in my opinion. I used to get them on a deer lease I had in Randolph County near Caraway Mountain...but have not looked for any in several years. On the lease there was a big stand of poplar trees in a slightly moist area and that is where I found them. Good Eats
