I love casting my 10 and 12 ft. poles. You can get a much longer cast with them than a shorter one.

Longer poles are akward at first. Then when you learn how to use them, they work out great. I use shorter poles on boats, and longer from the bank. LongerPole=LongerCast

Shorter poles=more accurate casts, +s and -s to each.

I cast a 12 footer; however, I do use 2 hands, as I've found over the years that the torque that a 12' exerts on your elbow when you stop it on the down-cast is substantial and eventually the ligaments wear....

I've been casting 12-14 footers for years with no problems. I always use two hands: one near the reel and the other at the end of the handle.

Try shooting the jig instead of casting it. I do that most of the time. More accurate and easier if overhead trees are in the way.
    Good fishing.
