    Default Crappie thief

Last night "something" raided my fish basket! I had 15 nice crappie I was going to clean this morning, all that was left was one head and one live crappie. There was a spot on the side of the basket that looked like something had pushed on it very hard, about the size of a grapefruit and the door where you put the fish in was pushed UP the opposite direction it is meant to go, obviously the escape route of the culprit. Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions. I guess this means no fish in the basked overnight anymore.

Sounds like Mr Turtle, I have lost a few fish now and then to them.

Default Where did you leave them?

Hanging off a dock, I'm guessing. Probably a turtle. Could be something else like a coon or otter, depending on how deep you had it. If I leave for to clean for the next morning, I pack them in ice in a locked cooler so the coons can't get them.
A side note - last spring, we had a bunch of rainbow trout in a basket that managed to work the lid open and by the time we found it, we lost all but two of them. We bought one of those foam noodles and made a collar so the basket floats too high in the water for fish to work the lid open. - Roberta

My bet is a snapping turtle, they can flatten a wire basket and clean it out with only a few dents! they will cut a crappie into in one bite! lost a few that way also. now i clean them or keep them in the boat!

Have you ever left fish in a basket and later on pull up nothing but a snake?
