I typically fish sloughs and creek arms that fork off the main river....Look for those on your river and go from there. You can also find some close to the shore on the main river around brush and other types of cover.
Where do crappie spawn at in smaller somewhat swift rivers

I have the same problem in vermont. We get them all winter long in setbacks but it seems like the fishing gets worse as winter goes on. They do not spawn in the setback I have fished them with the right temps for 3 years with little success. Going to start trying the ditches I guess
I have found them in small creeks or streams coming into the river...!
ive found them in standing timbers in the river
fishing from the couch in front of the tv doesnt count
how far will crappie travel. So I get them on the ice in a setback all winter, it usually slows down about now and I don't really see them again until summer. I know a few spawn in the setback but not a lot. How far up, or are they more likely to go down river will they go?
This should give you a pretty good idea...or muddy up the water more...Doh
