    Default Crappie fishing ice out

    Hey everyone!
I know, it looks like I'm a new member here, but I promise, I've been here before, however the email address I had my old name signed up with got hacked, and now I can't reset my password to use my old account.

    Anyways, hey!

Question about fishing ice out. We have a local lake that we do pretty well on spring crappie from the jetties/boat docks. As of now, the center of the lake still is holding ice pretty well, but the shores are open for 50+ yards all the way around. I've been thinking of grabbing the ultralite and a couple tube jigs and giving them a toss. Anyone know if this would be worth my time in 40 degree weather?
    Thanks guys/gals!

yeah i was thinking of heading down to a spot where the fish were biting before ice got unsafe. its within casting distance and only 5' deep there. thinking small slip bobber, ice jigs.

Hey Sailor Jerry ... welcome back !!

I don't know about Iowa ... but I have caught Crappie in Dec/Jan, here in KY ... standing on the bank & casting out over blowdown trees. Granted, these trees were on fairly steep banks ... but, the Crappie were very close to the bank (and the trunk/roots of the tree). If I'd have had a 8-10' rod, I probably could have vertical jigged for them ... LOL !! But, as it was, I had only taken a 5' rod ... so casting was my only choice. And I was, in fact, casting a 1.5" tube jig ... and the "thump" was just as prominent as if I were fishing in 60deg water (even though I'm quite sure that the water temps were likely in the low 40's).
