Ive been fishing tournaments, local and national, for about 6 years with mixed results. In your opinion, what is the best approach/technique to fishing these?

Nathan, research is king. I love to study new waters and finding structure. Nowadays, the Humminbird side-imaging takes that to a whole new level.
2. (Where's 1?) Finding fish, then finding fish in four other locations is real important. How many times have you heard. "We were on fish during practice but..." A plan B and C are as important as plan A. Sometimes, just wind direction or cloud cover will turn fish off at one depth and turn them on in another. Thanks for the response. I agree structure is key to finding good fish. Most of my prefishing is limited due to work, I usually go into a tournament blind. Is there anything you would recommend, if i dont have a side imaging unit. I usually study maps, I guess Im just missing something.

After you get a lake "under your belt", you'll be better prepared the next year. There is something to be said for "Eliminating water".
