Most shiners are egg layers. But some minnows give birth alive.
Whenever I come home from fishing, I put any healthy minnows in my 300 gallon stock tank. I've got about 15-20 in there right now. Four of them are a couple of years old, and the rest from last year. Last night I was waiting on it to fill and watching the fish with my light and noticed two little bitty rascals that are much too small to have been crappie minnows last season. Don't know when they spawned, but I'm pretty sure they did!

Ive got an old koi pond that i kept running with all the plants in the backyard that i started dumping left over minners in last year, and ive noticed a few of the larger ones with a nice plump belly so i expect a spawn when the water temp gets right for them.
