amazing amount of dead fish

A guy i work with lives off a river in Michigan that has areas that freeze over and he was out walking this past weekend behind his house and took these pictures of dead fish. Any thoughts on why ?

Yea man, what's up with all theses dead fish and birds popping up everywhere? Is there somthing going on that we don't know about and need to know about? WOW!!!

I have heard some one say amonia levels go up when the ice melts, but that just what ive heard, I have no clue......we recently (finally) had our shad die off after ice out....tons of dead shad lining the banks and a few game fish mixed in....mostly shad though

we had a newly restocked state owned lake here in mississippi do the same thing a couple of years ago. It wasn't iced over as in your case, but late spring and BAM hundreds of dead bluegill and bass. Wildlife guys never did give an explanation that I know of.

is it a shallow body of water? I have seen ponds do that, shallow water, lack of oxygen(normally snow cover over thick ice)
Heavy weeds cover dieing off can kill fish, again, thats normally related to shallow water though.
The amonia thing normally doesnt kill the fish, just makes them uncomfortable(especially catfish)

Thats an ugly looking site regardless. You'll have racoons the size of german sheperds after that!

hi...in one of our ponds a huge lightening strike hit and killed almost every fish even the catfish...this pic looks like a chemical kill
