I use a 3.5 gallon bucket with a 3" hole cut in the bottom with good results. My boat is a 14' v-hull.
I read the post about dragging chain, just wondering if anyone has constructed their own drift sock with positive results.

Bucket sounds like a good idea. I don't think the stock metal handle would be up for the challenge so I could see adding a 4 point connection with some good rope.
Currently a non-fishing slacker! (not for too much longer)
Yep, I've used a bucket. Never had a drift sock. I like the chains. Its hard to use a drift sock in rivers LOL.
This only my opinion, but nothing you can say will change my mind. That makes it a FACT.

I am curious as to why you cut the hole in the bucket? Will the bucket work without a hole in it's bottom?
I have many buckets that I could use for this but I am not sure I want to cut a hole in them.

You cut the hole to restrict water flow. It works better with the water flowing through the bucket. I'm not sure but I think the drift socks are made this way also.

anyone ever try a drift sock in a river? i wonder if it woukd work.
Yes, a bucket will work without the hole. I cut the hole out because it's easier to dump cold water out after I pulled the bucket back to the boat. Cold, wet hands suck when you're trying to stay warm!Originally Posted by Moose1am
They work well in rivers. When the wind is stronger than the current, throw the bucket overboard and the current will pull the anchor tight.
I can't, for the life of me, understand why a stock metal handle wouldn't work. Who the h*ll cares if it breaks? It's a bucket. If the handle breaks, go get another bucket.
