I have a Garmin eTrex Legend that uses a micro sd card - the only way to transfer data from the eTrex is through the card. The USB is for transferring data to the eTrex as well as charging it.
Does the hand held gps have to have a micro sd card to transfer to hds units or can it just have a usb adapter. Thanks you guys have all the answers

I have a Garman GPSmap 60c that only has the usb port. I have to use free software to load the waypoints from the gps to my computer...then from the computer onto an SD card...and then to my Humminbird unit. There is a conversion process that has to take place for one unit to read the other's waypoints. It's a little complicated, but it works. Hope this helps.
