I have a Garmin eTrex Legend that uses a micro sd card - the only way to transfer data from the eTrex is through the card. The USB is for transferring data to the eTrex as well as charging it.

I have a Garman GPSmap 60c that only has the usb port. I have to use free software to load the waypoints from the gps to my computer...then from the computer onto an SD card...and then to my Humminbird unit. There is a conversion process that has to take place for one unit to read the other's waypoints. It's a little complicated, but it works. Hope this helps.
