    Default New to fly fishing

I am new to fly fishing, learned how to cast when I was younger but never bought any rods or really cared to. I recently aquired an orvis 7'9" far and fine rod from my mother its in imaculate condition, and I'm wondering if I would be better off selling it and getting something cheaper then haveing some money left over, I mean is it a bit of overkill to have such a nice rod for fly fishing mostly for panfish? I mostly use spinning tackle and to equate it to that I would never spend more buy a $150 rod when a $40-$80 rod is adequit.
I only fish on days that start with T, like tuesday, thursday, today, and tomorrow.

An Orvis, huh? You're screwed!! Once you learn how well that baby performs, you'll be hooked like a ghetto junkie on crack. Don't sell it, don't use it, don't even think about fishing with it. I have 2 Orvis fly rods, 3 Orvis reels, and 1 Orivs UL rod. Trust me my friend, take this addiction and break it over your knee. Promise yourself you'll never let temptation like that get to you again. Or you'll end up like me. $100,000 in fly fishing crap! Living life on the edge of the bed, and in the doghouse for wanting a fly trip over sex. Do you know how many dead animals I have in my basement!? Oh sure, starts off innocent enough. Little starter fly tying kit from Walmart. Turns into $10,000 a year in shows, seminars, trips, fly tying vises, better lines etc.. The worst part for me? It's the constant nagging problem of living in the trout/fly fishing capital of Dixie. The Shenandoah Valley. It's like a sex addict living 2 blocks from the red light district!

Take that rod, and BURN that work of the devil NOW! Just toss some gas on it flick a match on it before it's too late. Go to church and talk to your pastor. He'll verse you on the evils of fly fishing, and porn. Now go man! Go! And never look back.

Quality fly fishing items never lose their value. Because of the high costs, fly fisherman are always looking for 2nd hand items and collecting is a past time in its self. People collect and sell and don't even fly fish. Several years ago on ebay 3 Penn Wedding Cake Reels came up for bid. I had a 1968 Eddie Bauer catalog and at that time the reels sold for $385.00 for the three sizes. The winning bid for the 3 sizes, mint was $42,000. I myself was born in 1937, and paid $500. for a Hardy catalog of that year. Getting into fly fishing, as the previous entry said is like drugs its so habit forming, but enjoyable.

That particular model is a classic, one of the best rods Orvis ever made. (I have one myself). I would think long and hard before I sold it. It would make a great bluegill/crappie rod. It will even handle smaller bass flies.

I think I'm gonna keep it, I would hate to sell it then want one in the future especially when they dont make them anymore.

Don't make what? Orvis rods are alive and well. I have an old one from a deceased Senator. It's now my bass rod. Old as it was, they still had all the info on the rod. Orivs is for life. Mine came with serial number cards and lifetime warranties.

Now if you will pardon me. I have a mountain of dead animals on my desk. I need to decide which flies aren't going to be tied anymore. Because this is really getting out of hand. And when I get done with THAT addiction (you've been warned) then it's back to deciding which rod blank will be used for my son's first high end rod. Because fly fishing turned into rod building, too! You see, Mike, it doesn't stop at just a rod. Oh no no no. Ever seen those golf freaks/junkies/extremist? Same thing. Tell ya what--I'll take that work of the devil from ya. You sell it to me before your life is turned upside down, and you find yourself in rehab over it.

They don't make them anymore. The "Far and Fine" was part of Orvis' Superfine line of rods. Orvis stopped making all of the Superfines a few years ago. When I bought my "Far and Fine", it was literally the last one in the store.
