I have had a Garmin GPSMAP 76 for several years now and have no complaints. Pretty simple to use, waterproof, and supposed to float if dropped overboard.
Fairly inexpensive - you can usually pick one up on Ebay for less than $100
I am wanting to purchase a new hand held GPS for H2O also. I have researched and talked with other people just wanting more advise. And pro's and con's and one's to walk away from.

garmin gpsmap 76
Garmin etrex venture HC......go with the HC, it has a color screen, and higher screen resolution. It's as accurate as the Garmin 76csx I have borrowed from a friend for a lot less money. Only thing the 76csx has an electronic compass and it floats.

Stay away from Magellen. I received a Triton as a gift last year and it isn't worth squat. Poor battery life, dismal base map as compared to Garmin unit and speed calculations off as much as 2.2MPH when compared side-by-side with a Garmen eTrex Legend on the boat. Not a huge deal when runnign wide open but means all the word when spider rigging or longlining.
