Welcome to the board. Look for the peak spawning when water temp is around 62 degees.
Hi everyone..
I am a new member from Haslet, Texas and I love crappie fishing for slabs. My friend pointed me to this awesome forum and it seems really a good place to learn about Crappie fishing. Can anyone tell me when should I start pecking the banks for slabs and what water temp is best? I just read somewhere that they will be there when the winds from spring start howling, but can't find information on water temp. Is there anyone have any ideas?
Thanks..

Do a search for a post by Fowlmood called Crappie by degrees. Good info. Welcome from Middle Tennessee.

Man that 's a tuff 1. I've caught Big Black Crappie the first of march in 5' of water & 42 degree water temp. They weren't there to spawn but enjoying the warmer water. Really depends on the conditions.
If you're looking for spawning movement I usually start catch'n male Black Crappie exploring the spawning areas condsistantly, when the water temp. reaches about 56 degrees. Whites will be a few degrees later.
There will be a few fish check'n shallow water off and on all year. Just depends on the weather, light penetration, time of day, rising/fall'n water, insect hatches, baitfish movement, etc... Lots of variables.

Here in WV when the temp hits 56*-58* they really start firing up. By 58* they are up in the heavy cover, and in shallower water here. And 58*-60* is when the bite is really hot here for Crappie. I like my lake of Sutton becaue it has two major tribs. So the water temp in each trib. is a bit different. And the confluence temp. is also a bit different. So it is like fishing three different waters. Then add in the shady versus sunny sides of the lake and those temps. can last a couple of weeks. Sometimes longer, depending on temps. at night. Tom.
Thanks for posting the link, rnv. I'm not to computer smart. I'd have to have had a tutorial to get it done.
