It's not you. It's the reel. You won't have that problem with a better quality reel. Look for a reel with some type of oscillation system.

My Daiwas and Shimanos have perfect line lay because of their oscillation systems. When I wind the line on, it looks like a spool of thread -- perfectly even.

I use all my guides to spool on new line and the problem has stopped. dragging behind the boat after spooling removes twist and gives the right amount of tension to lay on the spool properly. Works for me anyhow.

Spooling a spinning reel cannot be done properly. It is against all laws of physics. Sorry.

Take the spool off. Once off you will see the small rod that the spool sits on. On that small rod you will see small reddish type washers. I have noticed that you will either have to take some off or add more to it. I had a shimano stratic do this and this was my fix. I took away 1 washer and it solved the problem. Might be a solution.

Well one thing is are you pulling the line off the bulk spool like you're filling a baitcasting reel??? If so don't, lay it flat on the floor.

The other thing I do is wet some paper towel wring it out and run the line through it while spooling my reels, clears off the powder from the line and helps stretch it a bit, the line does have some fine powder on it, every wonder what that dust was on your hand when your were spooling.

Might help if we knew what kind of reel you had.

Laying the spool down flat has helped me more than enything else. But, I agree also that a good reel is a real plus.

According to my Shimano Stradic Manual p16 that "v" shape, more line towards the front, is IDEAL to avoid backash of certain lines. So it seems it might not be a problem at all just personal preference as they (Shimano) says. Like Jamebond mentioned its just a tuning option with the spool-shaft washers not the cost of the reel. I have $20 Quantum that lay the line just fine out of the box yet I had to "tune" my $160 Stradic to suit me.
