I use 5.6 next to motor, then I use 8 ' footers then 10 footers then 12 footers, the boat is 8 foot wide, so I can cover 30 foot wide path. Only thing is, I have not trolled for crappie in 3 years, One rod at a time and one fish at a time,I am hooked on jigging.
I trolled for 5 years continuously then just changed up one day and have not looked back.
Better coverage and less chance of tangles on turns with staggered lenghts.
