    Default Little Help With Skeg?

The other day I hit one of the 706' stumps with my 120 Johnson at Truman and after I got home noticed the skeg was a little smaller looking. After further review a piece had broken off but was small 1x2", no big deal! Then I discovered that what is left is bent, about 1/2" from top to bottom. Thinking with the water going to harden up this might be a good week for water pump and fixing the skeg. Have any of you ever had one fixed. Would you recommend who fixed it? Or do you know anyone you would recommend? I live in eastern KC area, willing to drive a ways for someone good? I know this might belong on the Mechanical board but looking for someone local! Thanks for any help with this! Mark

A few options might consider if you want to PM me. You'll have lots of company if the lake stays this level into early spring,,,stay tuned.

You can straighten your skeg yourself with a rawhide mallet or a good heavy dead blow rubber hammer, fixed many of them in my time, the broken piece, almost any welding shop with a heli-arc could repair the broken piece, or you can even have a new lower half piece welded on........

I thought about beating on it, I was afraid of it breaking being cast aluminum. I guess if it broke I could alway have a new one welded on.

don't use a sledge hammer on it, I am talking maybe a 5# dead blow or like I said a rawhide, rawhide is the best, or at the worst, put a wooden block on the skeg before tapping on it.........

Did you do a good examination of the foot to make sure no cracks? Also wouldnt hurt to open the drain valves and make sure there isnt any water in your foot. If the prop hit may have loosend seals. I had to replace a foot before because of this.
