    Default Cane pole trolling

Does anyone here troll with cane poles? I found a cane patch growing which could supply plenty of cane for me.

Never have tried it but can't think of a reason it wouldn't work.

I believe that you will have to "cure" or dry the canes for a considerably long time before using.
The older the cane is before cutting is better.
Somewhere i remember hearing that it should take about five years from sprout to maturity to make the bamboo strong enough to use reliably.

Poles with reels to adjust your lines are a plus...but cane poles should get the job done too. Give it a try and let us know how you do.

There are a bunch of guys in my neck of the woods that just spider rig with poles dragging and pushing corks in the winter. They are fiberglass poles but if they will work, Cane poles will work too.CF

From 1964 to 1970, I used only cured Japanese cane poles for Crappie fishing. I think you will find the ones that grow close to your home will be too heavy even after curing. Good Chinese or Japanese cured cane poles will cost about as much as telescoping fiberglass. Telescoping fiberglass can be had with reel seats. BnM Slo Trollers or Black Widow with guides are available on our Site.

I have seen some old timers around here using cane poles for spider rigging. They looked hand cut, not store bought.

As stated, they will work getting all of them to match up consistently will be the trick. I have built some surf type rods from calcutta and the cured ones are surprisingly light and flexible @ 14'.
