Pushing Cranks

I am just about to drop down from 6,500 ft. and trout, to 2200 ft. and crappie at Rosevelt Lake here in Az.
I have been long line trolling and want to try pushing cranks.
Since there substantial weight used to get the bait down, and one of lifes great joys is a tussle with a 2 lb. crappie on a light rod.
Is there someway to use a line release of some sort?
Such as the walleye guys use on the big lakes?

I think if you catch a 2# crappie using a 2 ounce weight with only 10 feet of line out your going to get the tussle your looking for.:D

It takes a pretty stiff rod to push cranks like one of the B&M trolling rods. Believe me, it's still fun catching them on a stiff rod.

I really like the B&M's for trolling. I just got two 14 footers that I pull with. It's kinda tricky swinging a fish in, you just gotta be careful and not reel too much line in.

Thats why God gave us landing nets.
I will normally troll around .07 mph and plan to use same speed with the cranks about 12'.
Any thoughts on that?

2 oz? that don;t work. I had to put 8 oz on mine and at 1.6 MPH, they were still back a few feet.

DonDOn what kinda pole are you using with 8oz and a crank

I think on the second WM video he is pushing with a 4oz weight and a tightline special rod and going about 1.7mph with good results.
