    Keep America Fishing

On the left side of the web page there is a link to send a letter. Put your zip code in and it will send your letter to the EPA as well as the congressmen in your state and district. There is a template that you can use for the letter or you can write your own.

Just finished sending the letter, I don't know a lot but this sure seems to be over kill. There are some organizations out there that would like nothing better than to stop all the fishing and hunting in this country, and they have no idea what a problem their actions would cause. Without some checks and balances the waters would not be able to contain the aquatic life and the forests would not be able to support the wild life, some people just don't understand that regulated fishing and hunting is a good way to control over population.

This is indeed a serious threat to the enjoyment of our sport. If EPA bans lead tackle, several undesirable things are sure to happen--

    1. Anyone who pours their own jigs, sinkers, etc. will be forced to stop - reducing the enjoyment of our sport.
    2. We will have to discard existing supplies of lead tackle items - a substantial loss to those who keep their boats & tackle boxes well stocked.
    3. Costs of non-lead alternatives will be much much higher.
    4. Those least able to pay higher prices (including children, elderly, and the unemployed) will be hurt the most.
    5. Fishing license revenues will suffer if casual fishermen decide to spend their hard-earned dollars on other sports and leisure activities. It is these revenues that pay for REAL conservation efforts.
    6. Penalties for using banned lead tackle could be as high as $50,000 per day plus a year at club fed.

No one knows how much environmental benefit might be gained through this painful change. The tree huggers who petitioned EPA can make only vague statements about possible benefits because there's no hard evidence that lead tackle lost by fishermen creates ANY environmental harm.

Slab created a special (temporary) discussion forum for us to collect and refine the ideas that will add punch to our comments. We plan to issue a comment on behalf of C.c's 11,000+ membership, but individual comments are also very helpful. If you plan to send a private comment, that's excellent. Please click into the "lead threads" and use anything there as you write your comments.

Our goal is to swamp EPA with unhappy, but factual, objections to a regulation that would ban lead fishing tackle.

It only takes a few minutes and the letter goes to the EPA and your congressmen/women.
