Worm Farm Home

I like to go to thrift stores and flea markets to find insulated containers for my worm farms. I love to fish for Bluegill and Shellcracker. My worm of choice is the Red Worm or the Wiggler worm. No drainage holes are needed so the worms do not "Escape" at all. I use a heated long needle to place air holes at the top of the containers. This lets it vent gasses without letting the worms escape. The garden mixture is kept damp by just a damp newspaper placed on top of the soil. Once or twice a week they are fed yellow corn meal. That is all they get. Corn meal and a dampened newspaper works great.

I have recently moved mone into the garage so they will be further protected from this Alabama heat. The larger containers are the type I use to raise them in. The smaller container is what I take to the bank with me fishing. They will grow and reproduce in each container. When I get too many worms I just put half of them into the garden and let them do wonders for the tomatoes and bell peppers.

No more often than I use worms, I don't know if it'd be worth my time?

Which worms would I be raising for Catfish and which for Crappie?

I raise my worms to catch Gills and Shellcracker. Redworms and Red Wigglers are my worms of choice. They will catch cats but I do not fish for them. I will tip my jigs with wax worms for Crappies.

Ship you embarrassed me into looking at my worm bed.
It's pretty hot, I'm just a hundred miles north of you.
The dirt in the bed was warm to the touch and stinky. I found a few gathered together on the back edge of the Tub, just above the sandy layer. Its damp there.
I never found another worm in that whole bed.

I'll put mine pics up tomorrow.I just put in some rancid coffee grounds and vegtable peelings in yesterday.Looks like you need more water in yours thudpucker.Your dirt should clump together in your fist without dripping any water.Also more food of some kind.The worms can eat half of thier body weight every day.Mine eat all the food every day.

OK, I put 10 gallons more (Rain Water) and some Coffee and Tea etc coming this afternoon.

Once you get the moisture level correct,use the grab a clump of dirt trick and you have to add some every day.Not much,I use an old school flower pot to just sprinkle the top.If it is too wet just don't add any for a day or two.

I keep mine inside because it is too cold outside. I have 2 bins, one is a sweater box and the other is a 15 gallon tote. I didn't use any soil in mine at all, just news paper, cardboard and table scraps.

I will have to get bin pictures but here are the reds themselves.

I started with about a goldball sized amount and now have well over 5 handfulls of them in less than 8 months.

I need to go garage saling for stuff like that though. I may not use them for worms but will use them for mealworms and other bait.
