I have always heard that, and it seems to be pretty accurate. Any west or southwest wind and we always seem to do better.

ANother ole saying here is watch the cows. If the cows are standing, go fish, if they are laying down, stay home. Over the last few weeks I have payed attention to the cows. Seems there might be a bit of accuracy with that saying.

One other one. Notice the sticks in the water. If they are standing up in the water, its not a good fishing day. If the are laying flat (on the water) then its a good day fishing. An old fisherman here told us that, so far, seems theres some truth to that one also. I reckon it has something to do with the pressure.

Especially good if their tails are switching fast... cows LIE though.
First time I heard this one, on the way back from a not-to-good trip,
the ole man who told me about the cows suggested we stop and shoot
    'em for for lying :D

From the East, the fish bite the least....
From the West, fish bite the best....
From the South, blows the hook in their mouth...
    From the North, stay HOME

Thumbs down I've busted that myth ...

    so many times .... :D

I learned the "cow" thing from my Grandfather ... didn't hold up then, don't hold up now.
I didn't learn the "wind direction" saying until I'd been fishing for about 20yrs ... dismissed it as a "myth", with only a slight amount of "logic" attached to it, after many times catching fish with an East/North wind blowing.
Same goes with the "budding/flowering" of certain plants - as the indication of the spawning times for certain fish.

They all have a certain amount of "truth" to them, backed by scientific principles ... but, as with most everything else in fishing, there's no rock solid principles involved (and don't forget - other conditions are affecting the situation, too). When you get as few opportunities to go, as I do, you go when you can (conditions permitting) and you make the most of it :D ....... luck2ya ....... cp
