Authorities say twin toddler girls are dead after they drowned in the family swimming pool in Massachusetts.

Essex District Attorney spokeswoman Carrie Kimball Monahan said police were called to the home in Lynnfield, about 17 miles north of Boston, at about 10:20 a.m. Saturday after a report of "babies in the pool."

Monahan said firefighters gave CPR to 2-year-old Angelina and Veronica Andreottola before they were taken to Union Hospital in Lynn, where they were pronounced dead.

She said the girl's mother, Crystal Andreottola, was home at the time of the accident.

Monahan said the girls may have somehow opened a remote pool cover, but authorities were still investigating what happened.

She said no foul play was suspected and no charges would be brought

The two Kansas City teens who drowned this week at a sports camp in Pella, Iowa, could not swim, and release forms filled out by their parents said as much.

But camp staff members did not check those forms before taking the teens and 173 other boys to an aquatics center for an evening of fun.

“It was a tragic error,” acknowledged Tom Rogeberg, spokesman for the Kansas City-based Fellowship of Christian Athletes, which sponsored the weeklong camp.

Fourteen-year-old Gael Paulette, also known as Gael Chrispin, and 15-year-old Nehmson Sanon drowned Wednesday night at the Pella Aquatics Center. The two boys, both of Haitian heritage, were attending the sports camp on a sponsorship paid by a Kansas City benefactor.

Because the boys were minors, their parents filled out medical release and permission slips, or waivers. But these forms were left at the camp’s base at Central College in Pella when the boys were taken to the aquatics center.

Rogeberg said all the campers were asked whether they could swim before they were allowed into the water. A few of the boys acknowledged they could not and sat on the sidelines. Gael and Nehmson told counselors they could swim, Rogeberg said.

But their release forms said otherwise.

“Both parents indicated these boys were not swimmers, but we did not discover that until after the accident,” Rogeberg said Friday. “The waivers were not brought to the pool. That would have been the right thing to do.”

Michele Catellier, a forensic pathologist with the Iowa medical examiner’s office, said preliminary autopsy results indicated the drownings were accidental and there was no sign of foul play. But the Pella Police Department said Friday that an investigation was ongoing.

Mayor Darrell Dobernecker of Pella said 20 lifeguards were at the sprawling outdoor pool complex Wednesday night, in addition to about 19 camp officials or chaperones.

He said that the aquatics center is lighted and that nighttime swim parties are common. The center has tube slides, diving boards, a lazy river, and wave and lap pools.

Rogeberg said the Fellowship of Christian Athletes had begun a review of its procedures in the wake of the drownings.

“It’s a horrible tragedy,” he said. “We’ve had maybe 2 or 3 million kids (in our camps) since 1956, and 50,000 in camp this summer. We’ve never had anything approaching this.”

Gael and Nehmson were among 310 boys and girls from across the Midwest participating in the camp at Pella, organized by the central Iowa chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in Des Moines.

The camp, which ended as scheduled on Friday, involved golf, tennis, basketball, softball and other sports. The Iowa chapter had rented the aquatics center earlier in the week for a pool party for the 135 girls who were enrolled. Wednesday night was for the 175 boys.

The swim party ended at 9:30 p.m. and all the campers were called to the buses for the return to Central College. Gael and Nehmson were not among them. After a search, they were discovered in deep water near the diving boards.

An ambulance was dispatched and CPR was administered, but the boys were pronounced dead at a hospital.

Nehmson was born in the United States. Gael moved here with his mother after they lost their home in the Haitian earthquake earlier this year.

A sister of Nehmson also was attending the sports camp. She and a few other campers were called home by their parents after the drownings.

The Star’s Kevin Hardy contributed to this report. To reach Matt Campbell, call 816-234-4905 or send e-mail to [email protected].

A weird coincidence, I met this persons Mother at my daughters wedding (Thursday). She and her fiancée are good people and it was really shocking to hear the news after I read this post.
I agree with beagle on this one, very depressing, I had people asking me "how do you drown in a lake???" I told them that people do, it just depends on the circumstances and if they were doing something "stupid" or if just things happen, it's hard to say about this particular one, but a couple of the ones in Cooks list didn't know how to swim.
I know some folks that don't know how to swim, and they are scared to get into water, no understanding why someone who can't swim would get into water whether in a boat or not without some sort of flotation device, whether you wear it or hold onto a raft or something.
I don't know, I'm pretty disturbed about all this right now.......

    and another from MWT

ST. PETERS -- A 22-year-old man drowned early Sunday in a city park pond after attending a party with friends at a nearby home, police and a relative said.

Michael Kowalewski, of St. Charles, went swimming with at least two friends at about 4 a.m. Sunday at Woodlands Sports Park in St. Peters. The group had partied together at a home in the 1900 block of Scenic Meadow Court, police said.

Kowalewski’s friends couldn’t find him after they got out of the water and went looking for him in the dark and a second time after sunrise, police said.

After they called police about 12:20 p.m. to report him missing, rescuers searched the pond and surrounding park land by helicopter, in boats and with police dogs.

Police are investigating the timeline of events.

Cpl. Lou Amighetti of the Missouri Water Patrol said officers pulled Kowalewski’s body from the 5- to 7-foot-deep pond at about 3 p.m. Sunday.

Kowalewski was a server and bartender at Whitmoor Country Club and a senior studying exercise science at Lindenwood University, said his brother David Kowalewski, 20.
