    Default Believe it or not

    I caught a 3''-3 1/2'' shad on a baited size #4
hook with a small minnow on it.The shad had taken
the hook and minnow as any crappie would.
I have fished quite a few years but this is my first
time in doing this. Maybe I shoud have left the shad
on. may have caught a really large crappie

That is unusual that a shad would go after a minnow. Around here we have the schools of smaller shad that the crappie are gorging themselves on right now, but also some of the very mature gizzard and herring shad that can be as big as 8-12". I see them often school around the brigdes and some clients just don't understand why they can't catch them. Know a guy on Owachita that uses them for striper. Hook in the mouth out the nostril, sinks them with a 3oz. weight down to 30-40 ft. and watches the monsters come out of 100+ ft. of water after them.

There is a specie of Shad in Watts Bar Lake (E Tn - TN River chain) that will eat a minnow, hit a jig, or hit a crankbait !! When hooked, they put up a pretty good fight. They also do a lot of "jumps" ... hence the nickname "Tennesse Tarpon" (not to mention that they look a lot like a Tarpon). But, what they really are is a "Skipjack Herring" !! Check this out -

    Here's what one looks like:

This is probably your boy, if you're fishing waters that are connected to or part of the major river systems of the Southeast (Tn River, Cumberland River, Miss. River) .......... cp
