Default What type/brand reel for jig poles?

    Hi all:

What type/brand of reel do you prefer for your jig poles? I have tried the BnM mini baitcast and the Zebco trigger spin with bad results. The BnM would get a very small amount of slack in it and the line would make its way through the bady and tangle up around the gears. The trigger spin worked great for the first three fishing trips, but then the trigger began to malfunction. When I would release the trigger to cast, some times it would cast perfect, but others would cause the cricket to head toward the lake while the hook came back to me. I am hoping to get some input on a good reel, because $15-20 test runs are going to get old quick if the reels only hold up for a few trips.

    Thanks

You get what you pay for. I figure you should spend the same amount or more on a reel as you did the pole. If you spent $50 on the pole, you should put a $50 reel on it.

I just purchased one of these and it does well for a fairly inexpensive reel.
    Cabela's -- Shimano® Sonora® FB Spinning Reel
I went with the 2500 because of the larger spool diameter and I catch larger species (Stripers, Bass, and Cats) while long line trolling. The cheap reels won't hold up after a couple 8# Stripers get a hold of it.

I use Shakespear open face spooled with #4 lb line. Works and casts great. The only poles I will every buy are B-n-M or Ugly Sticks.

On spinning reels as long as it's a Shimano!!! Just MHO though but they are my fav's. I've had some old TX models going on 25 years and they're still going strong. I also have some of their Side Stabs and Spirex and looking at getting the new Sprirex 1000 RG for my new Ugly Stix Pro Lite.

can't comment on the pole yet as it's the first one I've ever owned.

$50-$60 for a real good reel can't be beat.

Spend a little money on a Shimano. You will have it for Life.
I'm sick of following my dreams. I'm just going to ask them where they're goin' and hook up with them later.

I buy the ABU Garcia Cardinal 101's at Wal-Mart. About $30 and they've held up well. I routinely catch Blue Cats in the 4 to 10lb range while Spider Rigging for Crappie on a nearby river and they handle them without a problem.

Heck, they do pretty good with Crappie too

They come with 2 spools. I spool one with 10lb line and the other with 6lb so I can change them out quickly depending on how I'll be fishing.

We may have different definitions of jig poles, but I refer to my jig poles as the ones I vertical jig with over structure or ledges. So, I spend my reel money where I think it is needed. For a jig pole, I think you only need something that will hold your line and small. I have some for less than $10 that work fine for my jig poles and they don't get much of a test except to crank a couple of turn and lift it up. Just another opinion.

I use the same poles for pretty much everything. I jig and long line troll with the same rods. I did get one special one for pushing jig since you use a heavy weight with it.

So my reels are used for trolling, casting and tight lining and what ever else I do.

everybody has different techniques, i wouldn't dare put my jig pole in my trollin' rack!!

if you're casting follow the guy's advice and get a good reel, shimano, abu, i have a us reel 180 sx i love, whatever but somethin' nice. trigger spins and push buttons have mechanisms that break, open face reels are simpler and more effective. if you insist on a trigger spin pflueger makes a nice 5 ball bearing for around 40 bucks.

jig fishing for us is vertical fishing, no casting, just different lingo, but we still use big baitcast reels to balance out the rod and for their longevity, plus you don't have to worry about a scrap fish like a large mouth bass strippin' out the gears!!
I clever quip fishing ironic statement crappie!
