worth the stop
Made a little pilgrimmage of sorts yesterday - Had to go to Jackson, MS
with the wife and little girl, and stopped by Grenada Lake on the way back.
That was one of the best visitor centers I have ever been in.
I didn't realize what a civil war history the area had. But lots of nice
displays on a variety of themes. Could've looked for a lot longer if the
ole lady hadn't been standing there tapping her foot and looking at her
watch... some folks got no appreciation of history
But my favorite was a glass case full of antique fishing gear - AND -
the lake record crappie mount! I read it to say it was caught in '99
and weighed 4 pounds, 10 ounces - some of the literature I picked up
and didn't read till I got home said lake record is 4-1. Either way, that
fish was just OBSCENE! What stood out to me, is that it's head and
mouth were not very big at all, and it didn't have a huge, distended belly -
probably not over 18" long. But the GIRTH of that thing was unreal. Right in
front of it's tailfin, it looked like about a 4-5 lb smallmouth. Thumb and
forefinger circled around it wouldn't have even come close to touching.
I bet soon as we left, the park rangers had to get out the windex, cause
I sure smudged/fogged up the glass in front of that crappie! :D
The lake was REAL low, and the color of a Yoo-hoo chocolate drink that
my kids like, if you are familiar with those, just picture a whole lake of
Yoo-Hoo. Got to get down there someday and fish it!
