I've wanted to ask the same question. How much weight for the death star in 20 ft. of water. Also is 3 enough to drop in one place, or should I drop more. This will be may first time . Thanks Alot
I am in the process of building some PVC trees. They will be around 5' to 6' tall with branches about 30" long. Do yall think 20 lbs of concrete would be plenty to hold them in place or should I use more.
Also if I were to sink them in a river bend should I put them on the outside of the bend or inside?
Thank in advance.

I've been sinking bamboo condos in the lake using about 40-50 lbs. of cement. The bamboo has alot of bouyancy and they sink just fine. I wouldnt think the PVC would be as bouyant so 20-30 lbs should do OK as long as youre sinking in a lake with no current to speak of.
Health nuts are going to feel stupid someday, lying in hospitals dying of nothing.
I only have a little bit of experience with sinking PVC and what I've done has been back in the bays out of any current. PVC will sink by itself (schedule 40) so I didn't use any weight whatsoever. A very easy job compared to sinking pallets or brush. I just wonder how long it will take the PVC to grow algee and start attracting crappie in 20' of water? My stuff has only been down a couple of months. Good Luck.

Thanks for the response thus far. I've kind of have the idea that if I scuff up the pvc alittle bit with sand paper it might help speed up the algae process some. Maybe I can bribe my oldest son into the job.
i have the same ? as crip47. how much PVC do you sink in one area? on a river bend....i was thinking about puttin one in the river and 2 on the outside of the bend. but what about a bay? would you start skinking PVC in the back of the bay? or in the mouth of the bay?
The Sandpaper Thing Is A Good Idea, Algae Will Grow Quicker.
Pvc Sinks On Its Own And Usually Requires Very Little Weight
To Hold It In Place. Twenty Pounds Would Be More Than Enough
In A Lake Or Reservoir. If You Use Buckets, Drill A 1 Inch Or Larger
Hold Just Above Your Concrete Line. It Makes The Whole Thing
Sink Quicker . We Dont Use Buckets But Put Concrete In The Pipe. About 10 Lbs Does It And It Works Well. In A River You Have To
Figure Out The Current And If It Floods With A Strong Current,
Each One Might Be Differrent. We Put Out Plastic In Shallow And
Deep Water, It Depends On The Time Of Year, Where The Fish
Will Be At That Time Of Year. I Night Stalk And Like Mouths Of
Coves But Crappie Will Use Plastic For Spawning. How Quick
They Come To The Plastic Varies. If You Want Fish Right Away,
The Key Is To Put Plastic Out At The Depths They Are Using
Currently. This Time Of Year I Usually Put Plastic Out For All
Three Depths, Shallow, Mid And Deep To Use Later. If You Fish The Right Depth It Can Be As Quick As Two Or Three Days The Crappie Will Show Up.
And How Much Cover You Have To Compete With. In Out Lake There
Is Very Little Cover So When We Put Out Something, The Crappie
Will Use It As Quick As They Find It. Sort Of Rambling Here,
But These Are Just My Thoughts, Someone Else Might Have
A Better Idea.

THE ALGAE WILL START GROWING AS SOON AS YOU PUT THE STUFFOriginally Posted by markd85

I THINK IT IS OVERATED FOR ATTRACTING FISH. ALGAE BEATS NO ALGAE
BUT THE FISH COME TO THE COVER. THE MINNOWS ALGAE ATTRACTS
IS AN ADDED BONUS. IF THE FISH ARE ALREADY IN 20' OF WATER
THE PLASTIC SHOULD ATTRACT THEM WITHIN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME.
IF THERE IS OTHER COVER CLOSE BY AT THE SAME DEPTH IT MAY
TAKE LONGER. ITS HARD TO SAYS BECAUSE EVERY SITUATION SEEMS
TO BE DIFFERENT, BUT I DONT THINK YOU HAVE TO WAIT FOR A FULL
GROWTH OF ALGAE. JUST MY THOUGHT, I'VE BEEN WRONG BEFORE AND

Everyone seems to talk about algae. I fish a Reservoir that has no weeds and I don't think has any algae. It's loaded with bait fish and zoe plankton. we catch crappie in the summer and winter in the 20 to 35 ft. depth range. Most algae I've seen in most lakes is green. When we pull something up it has a clear brown look and is slimmy. We also have almost no current and they don't drop the lake.

I reckon I should of made my question clear, I was refering to river bends in a reservior (Sam Rayburn). Dont know if that changes anything. Do these areas still get the strong currents?
